Spine surgery rehab massage therapy TorontoPost-Surgical Spine Rehab
Rehab after spine surgery — discectomy, laminectomy, fusion and similar procedures. A broad category, since spine surgeries vary a lot.
Not a diagnosis — for more information, contact me or another trusted healthcare provider.
Once you're cleared, I manage the muscular pain above and below the surgical site, and help guide rehab exercises as directed by your physio, chiropractor, surgeon or physiatrist.
Typical course: Plan and timeline are case-specific.
Before we start hands-on treatment
After any surgery, I need your surgeon's okay before we start hands-on treatment. If you have questions about your specific case in the meantime, email me at oliverbeermt@gmail.com — I'm happy to answer them. We'll begin once you've been cleared.
Get emergency care if…
Calf pain, swelling or warmth, or sudden shortness of breath after surgery or an injury can mean a blood clot. Get emergency care right away.
Get emergency care if…
Go to the emergency room right away if you have back or leg pain along with: numbness in the groin, genitals, buttocks or inner thighs; new trouble urinating, or loss of bladder or bowel control; sciatica-type pain in both legs; or leg weakness that's getting worse. These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, a rare but urgent condition where fast treatment prevents permanent damage.
Rehab is emotional as well as physical. The biggest thing I see get in the way of recovery isn't the exercises — it's people closing themselves off and retreating from friends, family and community while they heal. We're deeply social creatures, and isolation hurts both mental and physical health. Lean on the people around you, practically and socially, while you're getting through this.
The way we feel does so much for the way we heal. We heal better when we're around friends and family.
